Certain basic skin care rules should be followed all year long. However, your winter skin care regimen should be more extensive due to the extreme indoor and outdoor temperatures. You need to do more than the basics if you are going to protect your skin from the elements. The winter skin care adviceyou are about to read will help you to prepare to nourish, protect and provide for your skin during the coldest time of the year. Most people neglect to do so and then wonder why their skin gets cracked and loses its luster.

Winter is just around the corner and the cold weather can play havoc on the skin. Every season we should evaluate our skin care routine. For instance, during the winter months the sebaceous (oil) glands produce less oil; thus for those with oily skin during the summer months they may find some relief from excess oil during the winter. However for those of us with combination skin or dry skin, the winter months dry out the skin even more.

Cleansing for the body, consider a body wash that is gentle and can enrich the skin such as aloe Vera. After your shower pat down with a lotion rich in moisture such as shea butter. If possible consider using fragrance- and dye-free laundry detergents and avoid fabric softeners. These chemicals embedded into our clothes can irritate dry skin.

Keep your hand bag stocked with pure Vitamin E, organic Lip Butter or Lip Balm

Buy products that contain essential oils versus fragrance oils which contain a mix of unknown chemicals that encourage your skin to become dehydrated

Purchase gel cleansers for cleaning your face and/or body. Avoid foaming cleansers which tend to strip your skin of natural oils.

Stock your wardrobe with an abundant supply of 100% cotton under clothing (including socks) which allows your skin to breathe while other articles of clothing like wool sweaters work to keep body heat in.

Buy products to care for your skin that do not contain any form of alcohol

Add Flax seed oil to your diet. It encourages internal hydration along with a host of other health benefits.

If you don't own one already, invest in a humidifier. A humidifier will help add moisture back to air that has been dehydrated by indoor heat

Choose natural oils which are not only hydrating, but that easily penetrate. Some good choices include almond oil, avocado, macadamia, rosehip oil, evening primrose oil, extra virgin olive oil and shea butter (a nut butter which is extremely hydrating). Oily or combination skin may opt for jojoba oil, sesame seed oil, and apricot kernel oil as well as some of the above. Listen to your skin to determine what best suits your needs. Many natural oils can be found in high quality face or skin creams. Look for ones that easily absorb. Hydrating creams should not feel greasy. Most natural oils are reported to be non-comedogenic (low risk for breakouts). However, some natural oils may be comedogenic. If you are prone to break outs, you may want to avoid wheat germ oil, coconut oil, cocoa butter, and soybean oil. For oily or combination skin types, these may be better choices for the body, rather than the face. Always moisturize when your skin is slightly damp.

Hands and Feet - just like the face, if you do not wear gloves, the hands are exposed to the winter elements. They need moisture and protection to. Consider a day lotion with SPF and at night give them a treatment with some shea butter for example. The feet which never see the light of day during the winter months are still vulnerable to cracks and dry skin and prone to developing fungus. Consider a balm with peppermint or tea tree oil at night to fight fungus, and cover your feet with cotton socks. Additionally a weekly soak in Epsom salts does wonders to relieve foot ache, fungus and cleanse.

The skin on the lips is extremely thin and that is why in that place the skin is really sensitive, lip-linking will not help at this stage because the bacteria from you saliva can make them even more dry and you could damage them more. Use a moisturizer for the lips, there are many that are unisex, preferably a moisturizer that contain vitamins and Aloe Vera.

For the whole body for those of you who use an acne treatment for your acne condition be sure to not use them if they are based on enzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid and Retin-A. On winter time you can replace your current acne treatment with another one you can see them here below (Natural acne treatment).
